My primary role is Organist at St Albert's Catholic Chaplaincy, Edinburgh. I regularly deputise elsewhere in the city, and am available for weddings and funerals. In the 2024-2025 academic year, I was organ scholar at Greyfriars' Kirk Edinburgh.
I have about 20 years of organist experience, and am passionate about the organ's role in Catholic liturgy and the promotion of Gregorian chant. I am available in Singapore for part of the year. Please feel free to reach me at andretheng[@]gmail.com for enquiries.
I am also interested in organ building history, and in 2018, published a volume documenting the history and restoration of the 1912 Bevington and Sons organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd in Singapore.
The organ is a prominent feature of the Cathedral and is Singapore’s oldest pipe organ. It is also arguably, Singapore’s most storied and unique organ, with its 1,882 pipes sourced from different times and places. The Bevington organ is the only one of its kind in South East Asia and is one of only ten pipe organs in Singapore. Following a full restoration and expansion in 2014, it is played daily for services and masses at the Cathedral. Saving the King chronicles the story of the Bevington organ, told through never-before-seen archival material, interviews and news reports.
The book is available for sale from the Cathedral as is archived at the National Library of Singapore, and the British Organ Archive housed at the University of Birmingham (ISBN: 978-981-11-7257-1). A digital version is available on request.
An ongoing project has been towards overseeing the restoration of the 1835 Bruce organ at St Patrick's Chuch, Cowgate. The organ is unique in being the oldest chuch organ in Edinburgh, and in a very original condition owing to a lack of major work since 1870. The current project is towards restoring the organ to a playable condition, including cleaning of the pipes, and improving and repairing the mechanical action and winding system. A successful grant application from the Pilgrim Trust will provide funding for the restoration of the pedal pipes, action and chest.
